I have three German Shepherds and also volunteer for a rescue so have foster dogs that come through as well. We are always looking for a variety of treats for the dogs. Saw these and thought I would try. They come in a pellet shape that are about half an inch to an inch long. And they are a combination of tongue and cheek. One thing I love is the fact that it's a very limited ingredient treat, only two ingredients. The other thing I usually look for when getting treats for my dogs is where it's manufactured. Several years ago, there were huge issues with treats made in China. They were causing dogs to get sick and some even died. So I tend to stay away from treats not made in the U.S., especially if they are made in China, since China lacks regulations. This isn't made in the U.S. but in New Zealand. New Zealand regulates dog treats highly and have strict standards that must be followed, so I have no issues giving my dogs these. When trying them for the first time, they didn't hesitate much. Smelled for a second or two and then ate it. Seems like they really like it. Overall, no issues with the treats, the value though can be better.
The idea of beef tongue in cheek kind of grosses me out, but I love the humorous aspect of the name of this product. I wasn't sure what to expect out of these "freeze dried" treats because we've never tried freeze dried.First, the packaging is really pretty, and as I've mentioned, the name is cute. The bag was easy to open and I was presented with these grayish-brown nuggets. The smell wasn't awful--in fact, there wasn't much of a smell. I have sensory issues, so I found the texture upon touch to be a little off-putting, but my kids said I was just being weird (they're not wrong). I rounded up the troops--two GSD rescues and an elderly Samoyed with some dental issues. All three were very enthusiastic--including my biggest GSD who isn't very food motivated. It was strange. He can be very picky and normally isn't into treats, which made training him quite a challenge, but he seemed to really like these. At first I thought it may have been peer pressure from the two ladies, but when I separated him and gave him one, he wolfed it down. The two ladies aren't nearly as discriminating. These are packaged like and appear to be a luxury item with a luxury price tag. The bag isn't very full (as noted by the weight listed in the description of 1.76oz). That means that these are great for the occasional good boy or good girl, but are definitely not great to use as training treats. They're soft enough that you could probably use them for medication. The ingredients are pretty clean, so from a nutrition issue they're not full of weird ingredients--just the tongue in cheek.Overall, I'd recommend these for the quality ingredients and nutrition and the fact that my picky GSD rescue boy will actually eat them!
So far, I have to say I am very impressed with The New Zealand Natural Pet Food Co.'s Woof Dried Dog Treats: Beef Tongue'n Cheek. While my dogs love natural dog treats like this, I am always very nervous about getting them, especially with some treat brands in the United States not always using the best ingredients. Within the pet food industry, New Zealand is known for some of the highest standards, so I was extremely excited to see these treats, especially since they have only two ingredients (you guessed it: beef tongue and beef cheeks). With the bag seeming a bit lighter than I expected, my two malamutes perked the moment they heard the bag open, and they got a whiff of these treats. The treats themselves are a bit softer than many other dog treats, which is to be expected given the ingredients. They didn't have the strong smell I was expecting, but they do have a bit of an organ sort of smell to them (those who give natural organ meat treats will likely know what I mean - it is a mild but distinct smell that drives our dogs wild). With the high collagen and protein, I was very pleased with the overall quality of these dog treats. As for the girls, the worst part of the treat was trying to keep it away from them. They have been trying to steal the entire bag off my desk for the last two hours (ending with my husband hiding the bag until training time). These may be the highest-value treats we have in the house right now. With the dog being resealable and high quality, I considered these a great value for the money and am looking forward to trying more from this brand (and my Alaskan Malamutes cannot wait to taste more of their treats).
Good quality treats. Perfect size and easy to break if you have a smaller dog. The dogs I babysit loved them (even the picky ones!) and had no bad reactions.
These freeze dried 1 to 2 ingredient treats have quickly become my dog's absolute favorite and I have no problem giving him as much as he wants since they're basically just protein without any garbage or fillers or whatnot.Dog is right around 20lbs and I typically give him a small handful (5-10 pieces) at any given time, typically as a reward. He's pretty spoiled though and knows if he goes and sits next to where I keep the treats, he's very likely to get some. 😅Anyway, 1.76oz may seem a bit small, and it is, but freeze dried treats are lighter than normal ones, so you do get more than you might expect. The price is right about in line with what I'm seeing for similar stuff, albeit at the higher end. That said, I can easily recommend these and most any other single ingredient dog treat! Get some!
This review is for “The New Zealand Natural Pet Food Co. WOOF Freeze Dried Dog Treats – Beef Tongue ’n’ Cheek, High Protein, Collagen Rich, Topper or Treat – 1.76 oz”.This is a new brand for me, but I know NZ has high pet food standards so I expected a high quality product with high quality ingredients. I was thrilled to find a treat with two ingredients- enough variety to interest a picky eater, and limited enough to be able to feed a dog with allergies to other ingredients. Beef tongue and beef cheek are relatively uncommon in the dog treat world and so these are really interesting, high value treats to my dogs. I am happy with these as they seem like a good, healthy treat made with high quality ingredients.I feed a lot of freeze dried treats but was pleasantly surprised by these. They still maintain enough organ scent to be interesting to my dogs, but they are fairly dry to the touch and do not leave a lot of residue on your hands or pockets. They break cleanly and easily without crumbling. They maintain their shape in the packet but are soft enough my old dog can easily chew them. I can also easily break them for training without creating a lot of “crumble waste”. Both my dogs and I are looking forward to using these for training.
